CHAPTER 12

THE SOUND OF GLASS BREAKING ECHOES THROUGH THE street and I hold my breath.

Nothing happens.

After a minute I turn to Michelle, she nods to me and I nod back.

We move forwards in a crouched position, scurrying towards the building like thieves. I don’t know who owns this stuff now, but I know it isn’t us.

It is afternoon but the sky is thin and pale. There are patches of snow on the ground and an icy chill in the air.

Michelle goes into the shop and I follow. As I suspected, most of the shelves are empty. At the back we find a little store room with brown cardboard boxes piled up.

I open one and find that it is full of energy bars.

“I’ve got water,” Michelle says.

“Take what you can carry,” I say, already pulling my bag off and filling it up.

We spend a few minutes filling our bags and then leave.

Phillip is waiting for us at the door. He puts a finger to his lips to warn us not to speak. Then he points away from the shop and in the distance I see a black van. It is not clear whether it is the same one as last night, but the odds seem high that it is.

I don’t know whether to feel relieved or terrified.

He signals for us to follow him and we steps out into the cold.

Michelle stays close to me and we all stay low as we run across the street to where the others are hiding.

“We have to go now,” Phillip says.

In the distance I hear a car door open and close. I shake my head. “It’s too risky,” I say. “They’ve got a car, they’ll see us.”

“What do you suggest?” Phillip says. He sounds angry.

“We’ll find somewhere to hide,” I say. “They won’t stay for long.”

Philip nods. “Where?”

I look around, but there aren’t enough places to hide. We could go back into the supermarket, but that seems a likely place for them to check. If they are looking for us.

“There,” I say.

“The pizza restaurant?” Phillip says, as if I am suggesting we eat there.

I don’t try to talk him into it. I start moving and know that at least half of the group will follow me.

We close the doors behind us and wait.

A few hours later it begins to get dark and the soldiers are still outside. I had hoped to by at the next resort by now, but even if they leave now, we are going to be stuck here for the night.

I turn away from the window.

Phillip says nothing to me as I walk away.

I find Michelle with a woman from Phillip’s group. They are sitting against the wall in the kitchen. The smell of pizza dough is almost overwhelming.

“Hi,” she says as I stop in front of her.

I smile back.

“Is everything okay?” she says.

“It’s fine,” I say and then fill her in on the lack of movement I’ve observed.

She nods and doesn’t seem to have anything to add.

“I should leave you two alone, yes?” the French woman says.
